The Public Health Nutrition and Child development (PHNCD) group is implementing several research studies in Mangochi and Blantyre focusing on interventions to prevent maternal and child nutrition. The group has ongoing studies on nutritional supplementation of infants and young children, studies on environmental enteric dysfunction, nutrition-infection relationships and child development. The group has the following open position to be filled urgently.

Job Summary

The School of Public Health and Family Medicine’s Public Health Nutrition and Child Development Research Group seeks a qualified applicant for the position of Doctoral/Postdoctoral Scholar in Nutrition for a research trials in Lungwena, Mangochi District and Blantyre. The Lungwena project is a collaboration between the University of California at Davis, University of Malawi College of Medicine, Washington University, St. Louis, and University of Maryland. It is a two-year study evaluating the nutritional impact of eggs during complementary feeding on infant growth, health, and biomarkers of nutrition and health status. The Blantyre Project is a collaboration between CoM, Washington State University and AFRICARE to study the impact of re-formulated Ready to Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) on nutrition status and cognitive development. Both positions offer an opportunity to gain management experience in a community trial. These are a 2-year position based in Mangochi and Blantyre respectively. The individuals will work under the supervision of Professor Kenneth Maleta.

Key Responsibilities:

Designing the study
Protocol and tools development and refinement
Ethics and regulatory boards applications
Recruitment of service providers and data collectors (HSAs)
Overall supervision of data collection, data analysis and correspondence with CoM and partners.
Ensuring that all study staff working on the study are suited for their responsibilities by documented experience and training
Protecting the rights, safety and welfare of the study participants
Conducting the study according to the signed protocol and GCP guidelines
Collecting and documenting study data
Complying with all applicable IRB requirements
Controlling distribution of the study product
Retaining specific records and issuing specific reports to CoM and UCD
Contributions to grant writing activities, publications, and presentations.
Develop and cultivate relationships between the research team, the community, the district health services and other public service providers that directly or indirectly impact the success of the research project.
Qualifications:

MSc in Epidemiology/Nutrition or health related science
Proven detailed experience in managing a community clinical trial is a must.

Position Summary

The position has primary responsibility for the support of the Malawi Country Office Information Technology and Communication functions. This includes support of day to day operations of the Country Office information system including, among others, assist the IT Coordinator with network administration, support of the Internet and Intranet Communication Technology, software and hardware maintenance, information back-up as well as facilitating switchboard system installations, telephone communications systems and maintenance issues. Apart from this, the incumbent will be required to provide new ideas/technology, which can facilitate significant improvement to CARE Malawi’s operations and programs. The incumbent will also be required to participate in thematic teams and other project activities for learning opportunities

Key Responsibilities

While reporting to the IT Coordinator, the incumbent will be required to perform the following key responsibilities:

General Country Office IT program support

Assist with day-to-day IT operations.
Assist with data storage validation
Assist with procurement and implementation of new, technology
Assist with systems development
Provide user level technical support for end users, computers, printers, etc.
Provide user level training on applications used at the Country Office.
Manage IT helpdesk and provide timely troubleshooting services to users
