EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

 Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced candidates to fill the vacant post of Executive Director at the Malawi Institute of Journalism tenable at its Secretariat in Blantyre.

The Organisation

MIJ is an independent and professional training centre established in 1995 to train journalists in Malawi. The Institute also has a national commercial radio station.

The Job

The Executive Director shall be the Chief Executive Officer and Head of the Institute overseeing the two sub-branches of Media Training and the Radio Station. He or she will be responsible to the Board of Directors for the efficient management and operation of the Institute. He or she shall provide leadership, advice and guidance on daily operations, implement policy and overall strategic direction of the Institute.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities of the Executive Director shall, among others be:

Ensuring proper administration of the Institute in accordance with policies and regulations determined by the Board of Directors.
Formulating short, medium and long term strategic plans of the Institute.
Taking a leading role in budgeting and budget control.
Implementing policies of the Institute.
Formulating annual plans to the Board of Directors for approval.
Preparing ,submitting and implementing project proposals to partners.
Preparing and submitting annual reports, including financial statements on income and expenditure to the Board of Directors.
Implementing corporate strategic and business plans while aligning them to policies of the Institute.
Undertaking continuous monitoring and evaluation of operational progress through effective systems and processes to achieve the Institute’s objectives.
Ensuring adequate and efficient staffing through sound recruitment, remuneration and retention policies.
Any other lawful duties as assigned by the Board of Directors from time to time.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must have a minimum of Masters Degree in any management discipline and a Bachelor’s degree from accredited institutions, with at least ten years experience at senior management level. Those with experience in education or media management will have an added advantage.

Have demonstrable leadership and team building skills
Be able to interact with stakeholders and partners (local and international) at the highest level.
Have demonstrable wide knowledge in managing an institution similar to MIJ
Be experienced in results based management.
Be decisive, self motivated, assertive and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Be computer literate (Ms office, Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
Be of high integrity and Posses excellent negotiation skills,

Remuneration

The successful candidate shall be offered a negotiable three year performance related contract with an attractive salary and benefits commensurate with the seniority of the position and candidate qualifications.

Internal Auditor

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Internal Auditor will conduct various types of audits and reviews in accordance with accepted professional auditing standards to promote effective internal controls, efficiency of the policies and procedures, review the reliability and integrity of financial and operational information, review the means of safeguarding assets and verify their existence and ensure adherence to applicable laws and regulations.

These duties include but are not limited to:

Reviewing and auditing compliance with policies, plans, procedures, laws, and regulation;
Reviewing and auditing the accomplishment of established objectives and goals for operations and programmes and determining whether or not the operations and programmes are being carried out as planned,
Assisting external auditors as required;
Any other related duties as assigned.

TRANSACTION ANALYST (2 POSITIONS)

 The position

Transaction Analysts provide support in the development of comprehensive investment banking and financial advisory strategies and their execution. They are part of professional teams who provide advisory services to companies, institutions and government in mergers and acquisitions, debt capital markets and equity market, corporate financial advisory, project financing, structured trade finance of a long term nature. They also build and manage local and international banking/funder relationships which are critical to closing investment banking transactions.

Key responsibilities

Lead in all general financial and economic analysis at transaction level
Develop and maintain up to date research on key market dynamics which is a critical input into identifying and completing investment banking transactions.
Identify project finance, international trade finance and financial advisory opportunities
Lead in executing investment banking transactions from start to closure.
Build and maintain good relationships with issuers and off takers of issues
Demonstrate leadership in specific deal compliance on a transaction by transaction basis
Apply financial models and structures to simulate possible deal outcomes which will be backed with a deep understanding of the industry concerned
Assess and document deals for desirability and approval
Execute both own sourced transactions as well as all structured project and trade finance transactions in the bank
Manage advisory and banking relationships.

Key qualities

Mature, articulate and responsible individual who can work with minimum supervision
Extensive knowledge of modern investment banking practices
A professional of good standing and a highly disciplined individual
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and able to complete assignments in a timely manner
Must possess excellent communication and inter- personal skills.
Must be a motivated self-starter, dynamic and a fast learner.

Qualification and experience

Minimum of a professional Accounting qualification and/or post graduate qualification in Economics, Finance or equivalent. Those with CIMA or CFA qualification will have added advantage.
At least 5-years’ experience in a treasury, banking or finance environment
A good knowledge of the Malawi financial markets will be a big plus
A highly motivated self-starter who pays attention to detail
Must be highly numerate in financial calculations of various products.
