INSTALLATION AND ASSEMBLY ASSISTANT

 Purpose and Statement of Work

The purpose of this scope of work is to provide monitoring support for the installation and assembly of approximately 113 prefabricated storage units at public health facilities throughout Malawi over the course of approximately six months. Specific tasks for this short-term position shall include the following.

Create individual work plan, to be approved by the Prefabricated Storage Project Manager. This will be reviewed and updated weekly to ensure harmonization with the GHSC-PSM project in Malawi annual work plan as well as its Prefabricated Storage Implementation Plan.
Meet with appropriate MOH officials and District Health Officers (or their designated representatives) to travel to sites where prefabricated units will be or have previously been assembled to monitor site preparation and assembly performance.
Perform site inspection per the approved Inspection Checklist to ensure specifications have been met and confirm whether the site is eligible to receive the required Handover Certificate confirming MOH custody of the prefabricated storage units.
Meet with MOH officials at sites to discuss prefabricated unit assembly performance and results to date.
As requested by the Prefabricated Storage Project Manager (or his designee), perform ad-hoc travel to prefabricated unit installation sites, accompanied by appropriate MOH officials, to address any complications in the prefabricated unit installation process at such sites.
Provide documented instances to the Prefabricated Storage Project Manager of any observed deviations from the GSHC-PSM Malawi Prefabricated Storage Implementation Plan. This may also include project successes and anticipated progress.
Report by mobile phone to the USAID/Malawi Activity Manager (or his designee) as urgent issues arise concerning the installation of prefabricated storage units.
As requested by the Prefabricated Storage Project Manager, participate in meetings with the prefabricated storage project team and stakeholders to discuss strategies, progress of prefabricated storage unit installation and assembly, and any roadblocks that may result in delayed project completion.
Deliver completed Inspection Checklists, copies of Inspection Certifications, Handover Certificates, and any written comments related to the above responsibilities, to the Prefabricated Storage Project Manager or his designee.

Qualifications

BS degree in pharmacy, engineering, or public health from an accredited university required.
Five years or more of combined experience providing designing, building, and/or engineering support for complex activities.
Experience focused on warehousing/storage, with specific experience with prefabricated storage projects, inclusive of site storage assessment, installation, and assembly, preferred.
Experience facilitating engineering and infrastructure projects preferred, including experience monitoring quality and safety.
Experience completing site inspections and certifications.
Experience in Southern Africa in a comparable capacity an advantage.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Ability to speak, read, and write professional-level English is required.
Must be able to travel to Malawi as this position will be based at sites throughout the country for an expected period of six months.

Expected Deliverables

Individual monthly work plan, to be updated weekly.
Completed prefabricated unit Inspection Checklists at prefabricated unit installation sites, and provide copies of Inspection Certifications.
Brief narrative reports discussing issues observed during inspection visits.
Meeting notes from meetings with MOH and other stakeholders.
Completed trip report in accordance with Section F.5.2(6)(b) of the GHSC-PSM ‘DIG Prime Contract. The team may consolidate trip reports should that be appropriate.
The assignment is expected to start on 01st June, 2017 and the anticipated level of effort for this assignment is up to 130 days.

Theatre for a Change Malawi (TfaC) was established in 2007 as a Malawian NGO. TfaC’s purpose is the empowerment of women and girls, particularly in their sexual and reproductive health. We work across Malawi, with pre-service and qualified teachers, women in sex work (WISW), primary school students and Girls being Sexually Exploited (GbSE).

FIELD TECHNICAL AND TRAINING OFFICER

The successful candidate for this position will be based at CIP-Bvumbwe, and will report to the Project Manager. She/ He is supposed to implement the OFSP trainings and field-related activities and coordinate with UP field officers and extension staff to facilitate OFSP knowledge to farmers and field practitioners.

The principal tasks and responsibilities comprise the following:

Conduct trainings of lead farmers and government extension partners on agronomy, seed systems, vine multiplication and conservation
Development of activity work plans and budgets;
Promotion of Orange Fleshed Sweetpotato (OFSP) for food and nutritional benefits in collaboration with Government extension staff members and other partners
Identify and strengthen producers of Orange Fleshed Sweet potato (OFSP) planting material with technical support and monitor availability of planting material of six varieties
Ensure timely delivery of planting material to farmers implementing OFSP root production
Implement on-farm demonstration plots of OFSP varieties in the districts
Ensure proper data collection on establishment, pests and diseases, soils, rainfall and harvest yield data from all on-farm variety demonstration plots
Assist value chain and marketing specialists from CIP and partners with data collection on prices and availability of roots and vines on the markets over time
Provide technical support in testing small-scale processing and root storage technologies
Support in collection of signed hardcopies of all beneficiaries targeted by United Purpose and assist in data entry of beneficiaries in the database.
Draft technical report for review and finalization by the project manager
Any other duties assigned by the Project Manager.

Selection Criteria

BSc. in Agronomy, Crop science, Seed science or equivalent qualification
Minimum of 3 years of experience working with public and/or private organizations in seed systems or agronomy;
Knowledge of tissue culture, pre-basic, basic, certified and quality declared seed production and seed inspection procedures.
Experience in communicating with both senior and field staff of government, NGO and private sector organizations providing agricultural services
Have demonstrated success in working with multi-disciplinary teams and partnerships
Experience in field layout of crop experiments and collecting and recording high quality agronomic data from field experiments.
Skills/experience in training farmer groups on crop management practices
Advanced written and oral communication skills in English and Chichewa.
Ability to write technical reports
Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
Willingness to spend considerable time working under field conditions
Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.

Main duties and Responsibilities
