Emmanuel International Malawi (EIM) is a faith based organization working with rural communities of Southern Malawi in Relief and Development since 1987.

Emmanuel International together with other UN agencies will be supporting the Government to improve planning and coordination of Resilience Programs and Early Recovery activities in Malawi. The 3-Prolonged Approach (3PA) is one of the main approaches WFP Country Office has started to operate in Malawi. The Approach is a set of tools comprised of (i) an Integrated Context Analysis to refine geographical targeting and identify response strategies; (ii) the Innovative Seasonal Livelihood Programming (SLP) process to align Multi-Sectorial Programs into Multi-year plans with partners; and (iii) Community-Based Participatory Planning (CBPP) to build a sense of ownership and identify priority and relevant interventions.

Secondly Emmanuel International is also implementing Integrated Child Protection, Livelihood and Skill Development (ICPLSD) Program which aims at improving the wellbeing of vulnerable children through the Provision of comprehensive care and support services. Position Title: Civil/Irrigation/Agricultural Engineer

Duties and responsibilities

Assist relevant team members in the preparation of work programs and schedules.
Assist district council in site identification/verification, topographic surveys and preparation of detailed design activities, bid documents, and construction works of the irrigation project
Develop a quality assurance program for civil works for the irrigation component, and train staff in implementation of the quality control program.
Review completion of work and compliance with standards prior to completion certificates being issued,
Provide the much needed technical supervision of irrigation component of the project
He/ she is responsible to provide technical support to land resources activities that requires engineering skills such as in- site water harvesting structures , check dams, dykes
Perform any additional duties and tasks as will be needed from time to time
Qualification and capacity

Minimum under graduate degree in Civil/ Agriculture / Irrigation/water resources/hydraulics Engineering.
Minimum of 5 years’ experience in planning and design of irrigation development projects, water development and land resource management.
Have extensive work experience in a related field.
Good knowledge and understanding of irrigation and agricultural systems in Malawi River Basins.
Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team and excellent communication (written and oral) skills

Responsibilities

The M&E Manager will be the point person for project M&E, with a focus on M&E of project grantees.

Qualifications

Background

The Chemistry Department, Chancellor College, Malawi is participating in a project named Cassava: Adding Value for Africa, phase II (C:AVA II), funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and coordinated by the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Nigeria. C: AVA is being implemented in five African countries, namely Ghana, Tanzania, Nigeria, Uganda and Malawi. The project seeks to increase the income of value chain actors, especially smallholder farmers (SHF) and processors, through the sale of fresh cassava roots into HQCF and other processed cassava product in the five countries.It encourages the use of dried cassava products in livestock and fish feed enterprises, creating new demand which can be supplied by many small farmers, and other actors in the new market-led, sustainable livelihood. In Malawi the project is to be implemented over a 5- year period commencing April, 2014. C:AVA now invites application for the positions of Technical Officer responsible for Investment to work in the C:AVA project office in Malawi.

Responsibilities

The primary purpose of the Technical Officer responsible for investment is to support coordination of actors in the High Quality Cassava Flour Value Chain and other processed cassava products assist (directly or indirectly) in providing them with support as needed.

Duties will include:

Support the Country Manager to develop and execute a strategy to encourage private sector investment in cassava processing and particularly but not limited to investments in flash dryers.

Support the Country Managers to identify shortlist and pitch potential investors, helping ensure their business plans are sound and their operational plans are focussed on inclusion of smallholder farmers.

Provide guidance and mentorship to Country-based private sector partners (smallholder and large scale).

Support the Country Manager in ensuring that project milestones and targets are met.

Support the Country Manager in ensuring coordination of objectives along the value chain.

Building strategic contacts and necessary communication flows to build confidence for all value chain actors.

Ensure that appropriate contractual relationships are made between farmers/processors, intermediaries and end-users;

Support value chain actors in overcoming any problems encountered on a day to basis.

Support the awareness-raising activities of the project that are essential for ensuring that there is not a lack of knowledge about the products and their potential amongst both farmers and end users.

Support processors to establish sustainable supply chain of raw materials

Undertake other tasks required by the Country Manager to contribute to achieving the C:AVA II project objectives.

The Technical Officer will report to the Country Manager.

Qualifications and experience

Suitable candidates should possess a minimum of Advanced University degree in economics, agribusiness or related field.
Minimum of five years relevant experience, particularly in the area of investment promotion and business development is essential.
The person should have an in depth understanding of private sector operations in Malawi and development of business plans for agricultural firms.
The person should also have experience working with and supporting farmers.
Demonstrated knowledge of the constraints of working with smallholders farmers who provide raw materials for industrial processing is also important.
Terms of Engagement

The position is for a period of 1 year and 6 months commencing in 2017.

The project, Malawi Seed Industry Development Project (MSIDP) II, is funded by Irish Aid and implemented by a consortium which includes DARS, ICRISAT and LDT working with several private sector partners. The project aims to increase the productivity of the common bean through strengthening sustainable seed system involving public-private partnership; the use of complementary crop management practices and to support nutrition and household incomes in Malawi. The nutrition component of the project will promote the consumption of safe legumes and cereals, dietary diversification and knowledge transfer to critical target groups.

The Position:

CIAT is seeking to recruit a self-motivated Project Facilitator to lead and coordinate the design and implementation of the project’s activities according to the projects annual work plan and budgets to deliver the expected outputs and outcomes. In addition to regular monitoring of project performance, the Project Facilitator will be expected to provide routine reports as stipulated in the project agreement document.

Duties and Responsibilities:







Research duties:

? Provide overall technical support to the bean component under MSIDP-II including coordination of breeding, soils, agronomy, seed systems, M & E, gender, markets, information systems and capacity building activities of the project

? Establish and strengthen productive partnerships among key players in the bean value chain and enhance the responsiveness of the sector to demands.

? Facilitate liaison with seed authorities to ensure registration and certification of all seed production fields

? Work in liaison with the Seed Business Development Specialist in providing technical backstopping to bean seed producers and local seed businesses in enterprise development

? Work in liaison with the Nutrition Facilitator and Market Specialist in providing technical backstopping to the nutrition and markets teams and partners

? Work in liaison with the bean breeder, soils scientists and agronomists in providing technical backstopping to bean seed and grain producers for them to use appropriate bean varieties and recommended production practices

? Work with M & E teams to evaluate and document innovative bean seed and grain production and marketing strategies (reports and professional publications) to facilitate learning, knowledge sharing and scaling up the efficient and sustainable strategies.

? Conduct literature review and participate in writing scientific journal papers

? Assist with establishment and support to bean platforms for access to agricultural inputs, agricultural extension and marketing information.

? Assist the SABRN Network Coordinators in the planning and follow-up of research for development activities, including monitoring of milestones and in the preparation of regular technical and narrative reports

? Assist the SABRN Coordinator in the development of collaborative projects and mobilization of financial resources for projects

? Organize visits and meetings to the project

? Together with MISDP-II team, generate appropriate communication materials to reflect the work of CIAT and its partners under the project

? Assist the SABRN Coordinator in the management of public awareness events
Administration & HR duties:

In liaison with the CIAT-Malawi administration:
? Oversee all general administrative issues of the project and field activities

Under the direct supervision of the Seed Business and Development Specialist and with technical backstopping from other project scientists, the ML&E Associate will lead and coordinate the design and implementation of the project’s performance monitoring and outcome evaluation; provide an assessment of technology adoption, support partnerships for strengthening bean seed systems, draw out learning lessons and provide feedback to the project implementation process. The successful candidate will seek synergies with other partners in leveraging available and reliable data sources, and engage with relevant stakeholders in the technical and operational design and implementation of ML&E activities. Periodic reporting will be required on the measured and projected status of key output and outcome indicators. The candidate will promote and ensure women participation and gender balance in all project activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Design performance management plans for the project and monitor the implementation processes to track milestones and report on performance indicators and outputs.
Design and conduct baseline and follow up household and community surveys to establish baseline database and to assess adoption levels, pathways, constraints, and outcomes.

Evaluate and document innovative bean seed production and marketing strategies (reports and professional publications) to facilitate learning, knowledge sharing and scaling up the efficient and sustainable strategies.

Work together with the Seed Business Development Specialist in providing technical backstopping to seed businesses in quality seed production, market orientation, market research and business planning

Link seed producers to identified markets and help organize producers to meet demands of the identified markets.

Collect and characterize seed demand and supply as well as marketing information on common bean to help guide activity review and planning.

Participate actively in project review and planning meetings.

Work closely with project management staff and contribute to periodic monitoring and evaluation

reports.

Contribute to capacity strengthening of project staff and other partners through on-the-job training

as well as structured training workshops.

Publish action research results or success stories and contribute to dissemination of results to stakeholders.



Qualifications and Experience:

? Master of Science degree in Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness, Economics, Development Studies, or related social science fields from a recognized university.

? Minimum of 3 years’ experience in designing and conducting ML&E activities.

? Experience and understanding of data collection and survey

and survey methodologies, including statistical

survey methodologies and analysis with demonstrated proficiency with R, SPSS and STATA statistical

packages.

? An in-depth understanding of web mapping, GIS and sharing of geo-processing results for monitoring

and decision making.

? Good understanding of agricultural markets and the seed system and its development challenges in

The Position:

CIAT is seeking to recruit a versatile Nutrition Associate to support the above-mentioned project in Malawi. Under the direct supervision of the CIAT-Nutritional Facilitator, and with technical support from other project scientists, the Nutrition Associate will assist with the assessment of the food and nutrition context in the targeted districts and conduct other related studies to inform intervention, design and nutrition outcomes. The position will also coordinate implementation of nutrition field work and assess the effectiveness of delivery systems and promotional strategies in creating demand and access to targeted legumes and cereals.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Develop nutrition education and promotional materials and key messages to address poor dietary practices, gaps in knowledge and attitudes and barrier to dietary diversity to create awareness of the nutrition and health benefits of beans and other target legumes and cereals in MISDP-II project.

Adapt the existing local recipes and formulate new diverse nutrient dense recipes using the six food group dietary guidelines and assess their acceptability.



Introduce gender inclusive local processing methods for value addition for beans and other target legumes and cereals in the project.

Engage partners to promote availably, consumption and sale of the beans and locally processed and new nutrient dense formulation of bean based products and other targeted legume and cereal products in the target communities using various proven delivery systems (e.g. care group model, farmers’ groups, home grown school programmes).

Train the trainer for MSIDP-II partners to strengthen capacity of frontline workers on technologies for increasing utilisation of beans and other target legumes and cereals at household and community level.

Engage the private sector and identify market-based approaches for the widespread dissemination and adoption of bean based food technologies and products in both rural and urban areas.

Represent CIAT at national nutrition technical meetings and at district nutrition coordinating committee meeting in intervention districts as required to contribute in technical discussions, exchange experiences, advocate for nutrition interventions and identify areas of potential collaboration.

Provide activity reports according to the work plan, contribute to scientific publication, success stories and dissemination of results to stakeholders.

Qualifications and Experience:



? Master of Science degree in human nutrition or food Science or closely related field from a recognized university with at least 3 years of work experience in relevant food and nutrition programs.

? Good understanding of nutrition, nutritional deficiencies and national interventions addressing these deficiencies and understanding of food-based approaches to addressing under-nutrition

including micronutrient deficiency.

? Knowledge on food processing and product development

? Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative methodologies for assessing diet diversity and diet quality,

developing food calendars’ and for designing food-based interventions to improve nutrition outcome

? Familiarity with Scaling Up Nutrition, Malawi dietary guideline, proven community nutrition delivery

systems such as care group model

? Good track record of development work in community-based nutrition programs in Malawi

? Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Chichewa; Knowledge of other local

languages of project communities would be an added asset
