UNC Project-Malawi, a biomedical research, training and service project based in Lilongwe, invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced individuals to fill the following position:

Research Medical Officer

Summary:
The research medical officer will be responsible for participation as a member of the Medical Team in providing care as well as monitoring and evaluating study participants. He/she will collaborate with other disciplines and health care staff to ensure optimum care for the study participants. He/she will participate in quality improvement activities.

Specific Responsibilities

A. General:

Provide study participants with clinical care directed by study protocols and/or Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
Collect clinical data
Report adverse events
Achieve demonstrable results in cost reduction, improved resource utilization and control
B. Research:

Conduct/participate in clinical trials/research
Collect timely comprehensive, legible, accurate and complete clinical data from eligible study participants
Provide/perform clinical care and procedures within competency and according to study protocols/SOPs
Organize and coordinate clinic activities
Appropriately refer patients outside competency
Accurately and legibly record patients’ care and management packages
Write and report adverse events to data management centre, DAIDS and other regulatory bodies
Perform any other duties as assigned
C. Communications and Working Relationships:

Maintain an effective means of communication with different study departments, work colleagues, other health workers, study participants and visitors
Participate in local and international clinical/multi-professional meetings and conferences as required
Attend and contribute at staff meetings
Promote and safeguard the interest and well-being of study participants at all times
Provide support and information to study participants when necessary
Always act in a dignified and responsible manner toward patients, visitors and work colleagues
Effectively work in a team with other health workers
Be a visbile and an approachable resource for study services and personal issues
D. Personal and People Development:

Develop/maintain continuing personal and professional development to meet the changing demands in the area of clinical research services
Undertake/participate in staff performance appraisal and personal development within the project
Act as a role model in professional and personal attributes for all members of staff
Participate in the orientation of new staff and act as a preceptor
Assist in the maintenance and development of team morale, be supportive to all staff
Contribute to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) of staff
Keep log of own performance and in-service training log for purposes of performance appraisal
E. Management:

Ensure efficient management of resources in your department
Promote the development and maintenance of teamwork
Participate in roster planning
Promote a positive image of the UNC Project research centre
Participate in any cost improvement measures
Contribute to devising of improved job methods for increasing efficiency
Participate in the maintenance of accurate and up-to-date records in accordance with the Medical Council of Malawi
F. Health and Safety Responsibilities:

Take care of own safety and that of others who may be affected by your actions or omissions
Comply with existing health and safety policies and procedures of the UNC Project and Ministry of Health
G. Quality Assurance:

Adhere to the study protocol quality assurance, quality control policy, guidelines and procedures
Keep up-to-date with quality developments relevant to the study unit and related services
Continuously monitor activities against quality standards, anticipating factors that may reduce quality and taking effective action to address them
H. Further Information:
The post holder must at all times:
Work in accordance with the Medical Council of Malawi Code of Professional Conduct and Disciplinary Procedures
Strictly adhere to the provisions of the Patient’s Charter as provided by the Ministry of Health
Participate in National Health Programs
I. Qualifications and Experience:

MB BS, MB. Ch.B
Permanent certification/registration with the Medical Council of Malawi
Continuous Professional Development (CPD) track record
Must have completed two years internship in an accredited health institution
Knowledge:

Knowledge of Ministry of Health’s Patients’ Charter
Knowledge and understanding of the UNC Project administrative set up and policies
Knowledge of health and safety measures
Knowledge and understanding of quality assurance issues
Knowledge of relevant clinical and research protocols
General knowledge in health related issues
Advanced life abilities:

Basic life support/resuscitation skills
Excellent interpersonal skills

About the role

LTSM Chitukuko is looking for an intelligent, well-organised, experienced and trustworthy Senior Consultant and Country Manager, based in Lilongwe, to head our Southern African operations and oversee our growing interests in the region. Responsibilities

The position of Senior Consultant and Country Manager has the following responsibilities:

Consulting: technical input, building professional expertise, relationship management
Strategic planning: oversee and implement LTSM strategic business plan
Project management: oversight of all regional projects, contract management, risk management, procurement management
Business development: market research, partnership development, proposal development
Operations management: quality control, team management, resource planning.
Requirements & qualifications

Masters level education in agricultural sciences and natural resource management (NRM), with a strong preference for a science-based Bachelor’s Degree.
Minimum 7 years of work experience in community-based natural resource management, water basin management, grant management and M&E
Proven ability in project management, business development, grant management, contract negotiation, monitoring & evaluation and team management
Proven ability to write high quality reports and bids in English.
Demonstrable interest in social entrepreneurship and gender in rural areas of Malawi.
Proficiency in software (MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite), project management tools (Asana, Insightly) and CRM tools (Netsuite).
Knowledge of programming language like Python is an asset.
Past relevant experience outside of Malawi is an asset.
