SCIENTIFIC ADMINISTRATOR

 The Malawi Epidemiology and Intervention Research Unit (formerly Karonga Prevention Study) is a medical research programme, operating in Karonga District, and Lilongwe City. We conduct research on non-communicable diseases, tuberculosis epidemiology, HIV/AIDS and demography. The research programme is a partnership between the Malawi College of Medicine and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. The programme works closely with the Ministry of Health, with its research agenda aligned to Ministry of Health priorities.

The programme is developing capacity in NCD research, health informatics and epidemiology, and other areas, principally through the College of Medicine, and forging links with other institutions in the region with a view to conduct multi-country studies. Research is done in partnerships and in highly conducive academic environments. We are seeking a Scientific Administrator to be based at our Lilongwe Office, who will be responsible for supporting a multicentre data analysis project, the African Non-communicable Disease Longitudinal data Alliance (ANDLA), through facilitating communications between partners, arranging meetings, taking minutes, writing reports and facilitating and monitoring delivery on targets and scientific outputs.

Other duties will include:

general support in grant proposal submission processes, contract and grant administration, and budget development.
He/she will also be required to facilitate manuscript submission processes and maintain a database of publications.
He/she will also be required to familiarise himself/herself with the basic administrative processes and accounting systems of the Lilongwe office in order to provide support and cover absence of the office administrator.
The applicant will work closely with the Lilongwe Administrator, Senior Scientists both from the MEIRU programme, and collaborators from international institutions.
Requirements

The ideal candidate should:

have a minimum of a Bachelor’s qualification in Business Studies/ Administration or Accounting or relevant Science with appropriate experience in project management.
Good oral and written communication skills and demonstrable organisational skills will be essential.

Mechanic - Limbe

Reporting to the Fleet Manager, the position is based in the Limbe Coordination Office, with regular visits to projects in Nsanje or other locations.

Purpose of the Post
Performing autonomously, complex/advanced servicing, maintenance and repair of MSF vehicles and other engines according to MSF standards and procedures, in order to ensure vehicles are in perfect running conditions.

Major responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Performing autonomously and ensuring, all necessary complex / advanced maintenance and repair of MSF vehicles and mechanical equipment
Responsible for the equipment and tools, checking they are correctly and safely used, maintaining and renewing them when necessary and keeping the inventory updated.
Ensuring that all record sheets and books related to maintenance are always completed and preparing needed reports before and after any repair or required maintenance.
Required work experience:

Previous work experience in reputable garage or workshop as mechanic or head of workshop
Deep knowledge of Toyota Land Cruiser 4×4 vehicles.
Educational qualifications:

Diploma in Mechanics
Diploma in Electrical Mechanic is also an advantage

Position Purpose

Responsibilities

You will be responsible for but not limited to the following:

Contracting and registering growers.
Providing training and extension services to registered growers to ensure the practice of MAS and compliance to JTI best practices.

Distributing inputs to registered growers
Monitoring the growers tobacco crop and submitting reports on crop growth.

Facilitating and monitoring growers’ tobacco sales to expedite loan repayments.
Qualifications and Experience

A minimum of a Diploma in Agriculture or any other related field from a recognized institution. However, Degree holders will have an added advantage.
A minimum of 3 years working experience with high level of tobacco knowledge.
Ability to travel to the field and tit into rural society
Skills, Competencies and Languages

Excellent written and spoken English and the ability to communicate in Chichewa or Tumbuka or other vernacular language from the North.

Organisational Relationship: Under the Direct Supervision of the Diocesan CADECOM Secretary

Major Tasks and Activities

Coordinate actual implementation and reporting of the project activities.
Build capacity of other Diocesan project officers and other implementing partners in Strength Based Approach and Participatory Rural Appraisal tools for effective implementation of the project

Source and share relevant technical information with other stakeholders
Creating awareness for success stories of communities and documenting the same.

Requirements

A Bachelors Degree in Agriculture, Social Sciences with emphasis in Rural Development, Project Management or any relevant field
At least three to five years of professional experience in implementing/managing integrated development programming, with knowledge of practices in monitoring and evaluation.
Experience implementing/managing programs related to livelihood, nutrition, agriculture or food security, water, sanitation and hygiene.
Demonstrated skills in M&E design with previous experience in application of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies
Fluency in English and at least one locally spoken language in Malawi.
Excellent oral and written analytical communication skills, ability to work well with people, use good judgment and commit to CADECOM’s​​​​​​​ mission.
Computer literate (MS Office, SPSS, Epi info) must be competent in the use Microsoft Excel.
Ability to transfer knowledge through formal and informal training.
Willingness to travel extensively to the project sites to interact with stakeholders and project participants.
Previous NGO experience for two or more years preferred.
